How to Style: Men's Textured Fringe

A bit of background...

The men’s textured fringe has become, and stayed, one of the most popular modern haircuts of the last 20 years. It’s versatile, stylish, and works for a wide range of hair types and face shapes. Somehow bringing a casual and messy look whilst still having a polished feel, a textured fringe gives you effortless style, without having to try too hard.

The Cut

Before styling even comes into play, the haircut itself matters. A textured fringe relies on choppy layers and movement at the front, not blunt lines. Explaining to your barber how you want the finished look to be should be more than enough for a pro; however, if you want to be more specific, you can ask them for some point cutting or razor work to create more natural texture and make the style look more ‘lived-in’.

The Styling

The styling of a textured fringe is simple if you’ve selected the right product. However, one point to note before you go working through your finishing product is that your hair needs to be bone dry before you apply. This is so that the texture is maintained throughout the day, not leaving you with a fluffy mess. Anyway, on to the product…

A product prioritising grip and hold, alongside a natural matte finish, is what you need to look for, as contrary to many assumptions, you need a good level of hold to ensure your style doesn’t get blown away the moment you step out the door. Alongside this, a product with grip makes creating texture super simple; a product that’s too loose when worked through will make achieving consistently great styling a real problem.

We would recommend either the Dapper Dan Texture Dust or Super Hold Clay. Both of the products are part of the ‘ultra matte’ collection with really dry finishes for a perfectly natural look. Paired with the ideal finish, both options have really high grip strength and hold, so performance and styling won’t be a concern. Our recommendation would only change if you have particularly dry hair, as in that case, the Dapper Dan Matt Paste with its high hold and low shine, will give hair that natural level of shine to prevent it from looking too dry, whilst still being perfectly suited to styling a textured fringe.

Keeping it fresh

When it comes to the style more broadly, textured fringes pair especially well with sharp fades and tapers, which need regular visits to the barbershop for proper maintenance. However, this also pairs well with a fringe, since regardless of the style you choose for the sides, leaving it too long between seeing your barber will leave you and your fringe looking like 2010 Justin Bieber.
